New Oud Holland Book and Exhibition Reviews

For the autumn 2023 edition of Oud Holland Reviews, four reviewers contribute their stance on four new publications.
Noëlle L. W. Streeton examines Flesh, gold and wood. The Saint-Denis altarpiece in Liège and the question of partial paint practices in the 16th Century, and argues that it adds welcomed insight into recent scholarship on altarpieces. Jacquelyn Coutré contributes commentary on Paper knives, paper crowns. Political prints in the Dutch Republic – which was produced for an exhibition entitled 'Fake news & lying pictures: Political prints in the Dutch Republic' (Krannert Art Museum, 2022). Bart Verschaffel reviews The social context of James Ensor’s art practice, examining the artist and his work through the lens of quotidian society in Belgium. Lastly, Christopher D. M. Atkins considers recent debates around the notion of a 'golden age', when assessing the edited volume Dutch Golden Age(s). The shaping of a cultural community.
With this edition of reviews, Oud Holland also says goodbye to its first review editor, John Bezold, who has been with us since 2019. We thank him dearly for his commitment and engagement with reviewers, and for growing our digital presence.
We also welcome the new editors, Justine Rinnooy Kan and Nelleke de Vries, whose first edition of book and exhibition reviews will appear in 2024.
