Three New Oud Holland Book and Exhibition Reviews

For the winter 2020 edition of Oud Holland Reviews, three contributors give their own take on one recent exhibition, and two new books – further enriching the journal's newly launched digital platform.

Catherine Powell reminds of the necessity to continue research on early modern women artists in the Low Countries, by explaining the how and why this area of study remains difficult due to lack of primary sources, in her review of Elizabeth Sutton's edited volume, Women artists and patrons in the Netherlands, 1500-1700. Eveline Deneer reviews the exhibition and accompanying catalogue of the Fondation Custodia's 'Willem Bastiaan Tholen (1860-1931): A Dutch Impressionist', spelling out why most late-nineteenth century Dutch painters remain, to this day, little known to the French exhibition going public, certainly when compared to Van Gogh. And lastly, Alied Ottevanger provides an extensive commentary on the catalogue Erich Wichman: Ironische kunst, tragisch leven – which was published after the Wichman exhibition that took place at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht in 2019 – sketching a portrait of his biography in relation to his own output.

As the journal's online platform continues to mature, there will be an increased focus on expanding its coverage of the numerous eras present in the history of the art of the Low Countries, reflecting the diversity and further expansion of the field.
