Three New Oud Holland Book Reviews

For the winter edition of Oud Holland Reviews, three contributors discuss three new books, spanning subjects from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries.

Robert Verhoogt provides his take on the book Popular art and the avant-garde: Vincent van Gogh’s collection of newspaper and magazine prints, which dives into this, once little-paid attention to aspect of Van Gogh’s work and life. Catherine Powell, in her review of Heroines, harpies and housewives: Imaging women of consequence in the Dutch Golden Age – a compendium of essays – explores the shifting societal roles of women during that era, and the ways in which those roles have been subject to continual scholarly reframing, especially in the last decade. To conclude, Christopher White reviews the monumental tome Rembrandt: The complete paintings, providing a summary of the authors’ assessment of the artist’s painted oeuvre, while also noting how their own conclusions compare to the Rembrandt Research Project.
