Three New Oud Holland Book and Exhibition Reviews

For the summer edition of Oud Holland Reviews, three contributors provide critical reflection on three new publications – two produced by museums located in the USA, and one co-created by an innovative group of art history students.

Yvonne Bleyerveld reviews Rubens, Rembrandt and drawing in the Golden Age – which is a catalogue that accompanied an exhibition of the same name, held at The Art Institute of Chicago from 28 September 2019-5 January 2020. She discusses how it diverges, from the longstanding tradition of catalogues devoted to Old Master drawings. Sarah Joan Moran gives her take on Judith Noorman’s edited volume Gouden vrouwen, which is the result of a class devised and created by Noorman at the University of Amsterdam, on women artists, collectors and patrons in the seventeenth-century Low Countries. It was created in collaboration with her class’ students. Lastly, Nils Büttner reviews the fifth edition of the Frick Collection's now-defunct, Center for the History of Collecting, and its series on collecting Old Masters in the USA: America and the art of Flanders: Collecting paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck and their circles. He discusses the importance of American collections and collectors – from private individuals, to public institutions – and touches on the legacy of connoisseurs, dealers and curators who were instrumental in ushering artworks, from Europe to the USA.
