Three New Oud Holland Book and Exhibition Reviews

For the winter 2022 edition of Oud Holland Reviews, a diverse array of scholars and museum curators provide their commentary on three new publications and two exhibitions. Carrie Anderson reviews the catalouge that accompanied the 2020 Rembrandthuis exhibition 'Black in Rembrandt's time', in which she highlights its combinatorial approach to using paintings, archival sources and contemporary texts to illuminate this subject. Christi Klinkert's review of Angela Jager's published dissertation on Amsterdam's market for mass-produced history paintings expounds on the expanding importance that this research adds to the field of the seventeenth-century art market, following up where Montias and Marten Jan Bok – among others – left off. Finally, Renske Cohen Tervaert relays the ways in which ‘Van Gogh and the seasons’, the exhibition and its catalogue, add to the ever-growing scholarly nuances derived from the relations between Vincent, his brother Theo and their father – and the impact that their immediate surroundings had on each of their lives, and how that, in turn, influenced Vincent's artwork.
